This Advent, we’ve added an extra opportunity for confessions (Wednesdays at 6pm), like we usually do. I’m very pleased to announce that this new confession time will be permanent, so we’ll offer it all year long. We are generally very blessed to have good crowds at our Saturday morning confessions, and I’m hoping that many additional folks will take advantage of this new opportunity.
We’re fortunate that there is a demand for additional confession times here at Christ the King because this sacrament is one of the great spiritual treasures of our Church. How amazing is it that God loves us so much that He is willing to forgive us of all our sins as often as we are willing to confess them! He doesn’t want us to go through our day weighed down by the shame and guilt of our sins. He wants us to live in freedom, and confession is one way that He offers us a share in His freedom.
Some folks avoid confession for one reason or another. Perhaps it’s because they are intimidated at the thought of confessing their sins out loud in front of a priest. Perhaps it’s because they don’t think they “need” confession in order for God to forgive them. Perhaps they feel defeated because they confess the same sins over and over. Perhaps they’ve even had an experience where their confessor wasn’t as compassionate and forgiving as he should have been. But whatever the reason, I encourage you to come back to the sacrament if it’s been a while. And if you’re someone who usually just receives the sacrament during Advent or Lent, I encourage you to try and receive it a little more frequently. You might just be amazed at how much the grace of the sacrament lifts the weight of sin from our shoulders and gives us the extra strength we need to resist sin with a little more hope in our daily lives.
