Fr. Steve’s Column 3-10-24

This evening at 6pm in the church, we’ll have our first annual State of the School Address. This event was conceived by the Finance & Development Subcommittee of our School Board as a way to promote transparency and communication in our educational ministry.  There are so many good things going on in our school, and even parents who are heavily involved may not be aware of some of the behind-the-scenes activity, so this will be a good opportunity to talk about where we are (and where we’re headed) in areas such as Catholic identity and Christian formation, curriculum and academics, finances, facilities, volunteerism, and others.

I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that Catholic schools are as important as they’ve ever been.  Many studies have confirmed that while attending Catholic schools doesn’t guarantee that a child will grow up to continue practicing their faith, it’s still one of the most important factors that helps keep our kids Catholic.  This is even more striking given the sweeping changes that we’ve seen in our secular culture concerning so many different aspects of morality, anthropology and technology, just to name a few.  Parents today face challenges that parents a generation ago could never have dreamed of.  It’s inspiring to see the way that so many of our families are able to build strong Catholic homes even in the face of such secular challenges.  I definitely feel an enormous sense of responsibility as we partner with these families to form their children in the faith so that they can carry that faith with them into the challenges of the adult world.

Even if you don’t have children in the school, I strongly encourage any parishioners to attend tonight’s address.  It will go from 6pm to 7:30pm, with refreshments to follow.  As I say often, our school is the largest ministry in our parish, and all of our parishioners support it through their prayers and a portion of their Sunday collections.  While we’re realistic about the challenges that we face ahead, we are blessed with many gifted educators and dedicated families that make our school such an inspiring ministry.  I hope you’re able to come and learn a little bit more about this important work this evening.
