Lots going on this weekend! Of course the most important thing we have happening at the parish is First Communions. This weekend, we have a number of our younger parishioners who are receiving Holy Communion for the very first time. They have been preparing for this all year long, and it is exciting to see this day finally arrive.
First Communion Weekend is always a great time to rekindle the love of the Blessed Sacrament within each one of us. If we’re not careful, we might start to take the Eucharist for granted. But when you see the overwhelming joy on the faces of our First Communicants, it’s a good reminder to all of us about what a sacred and special sacrament it really is, and that it’s nothing less than the most powerful and intimate encounter we can have with Jesus Christ this side of heaven. So as you’re praying for our First Communicants this weekend, be sure and pray that Christ will strengthen your own faith and joy in the Eucharist, as well. That seems like a perfect prayer as we continue our final year of the three-year Eucharistic Revival.
Of course, I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge that this weekend is Mother’s Day, as well. (Happy Mother’s Day, Mom!) It’s a special day to honor the vocation of motherhood, and to honor the particular women, living and deceased, who have been such powerful role models for each of us. I hope all of us have time to do something special for our mothers and mother figures who are living, and to pray in a special way for those who are deceased. And don’t forget to pray for those couples who struggle with infertility and whose desire for motherhood has not yet been realized. Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother, may they find the path through God that wishes them to share their maternal gifts with others.
Finally, just a quick announcement that next weekend (May 18th) will be…Donut Sunday! In the past we’ve only done it on the first Sunday of the month, but since one of the primary goals of our new narthex was to increase opportunities for community-building after Masses, we are pleased to offer it twice a month moving forward. Many thanks to the volunteers who’ve stepped up to make this happen.
