From Rianna Doyle, Director of Evangelization and Youth Ministry 7-7-24

Christ the King’s Youth Ministry program has ended the year with a bang! From welcoming roughly 65 different teens for Youth Group to offering a number of events, retreats, and service opportunities, it has been a wonderful year filled with the movement of the Holy Spirit.

Before taking a break for the summer, 17 of our wonderful teens participated in Christ the King Youth Ministry’s final program of the year: Summer Service Week! This week, which took place from June 17-21, allowed our youth to engage in service in the South Bend community by attending a different site as a group each day while also having time for fun, theological reflection, shared meals, and daily Mass at Christ the King. Here is a summary of all of the amazing work these students accomplished despite battling the week’s aggressive heat:

· On Monday, we joined Tracy Weber at Cultivate Food Rescue where they packed 754 meals for those in need.

· On Tuesday, our group spent time serving at Dismas House (a home for people in transition after incarceration). The teens spent time weeding the yard with Teresa Oross, washing floorboards and railings, and cooking a meal donated by the teen’s families before sitting down for a family-style dinner with the home’s residents.

· On Wednesday, we spent the afternoon with Our Lady of the Road (a drop in center offering meals, laundry, and showers for guests off the street). Our teens set up an air conditioning unit in the chapel, helped with outdoor landscaping and indoor projects, and, with the help of Corinne Gries, set up the Common Goods Cooperative Grocery for the evening’s market night. To end the day, the teens ate dinner with the guests and attended Mass officiated by Fr. Cameron in Our Lady of the Road’s Oratory Chapel of the Holy Spirit.

· On Thursday, we gave our time in service of Hope Ministries (a faith-centered transitional housing site for those experiencing homelessness). Our group did heavy landscaping projects on the property to help turn an overgrown yard space into a future home for garden planters. Teens also picked up trash around the building and joined Tessa Mammolenti in sorting food before heading inside to serve lunch for/eat lunch with the residents.

· On Friday, our group ended the week with a stop at the Center for the Homeless. Teens cleaned playrooms and the dining room before sorting through clothing/item donations in the donation center with Mary Hill.

The work our teens did will affect thousands of people in need in the South Bend community and beyond! Thank you so much to our 17 participants for your desire to make a difference and serve with grace, humility, and love. Thank you also to Fr. Cameron (who accompanied us for the entirety of the week), Fr. Steve, and all of the wonderful volunteers who made this Summer Service Week an incredible experience for our teens! Our work was only possible due to your generosity of time and treasure, and we are so grateful.

Please continue to pray for our young people! May they continue to go out as Christ’s hands and feet in the world to encounter others with love.
