Our patronal feast day is coming up soon (this year the Feast of Christ the King is Sunday the 24th), so as always, we will lead up to our feast day by observing a 40-Hour Devotion. We’ll kick it off with Mass at 5:30pm this Thursday, November 21st, and we’ll conclude with our usual 10am Benediction on Saturday November 23rd.
I have always loved having this 40-Hour Devotion as part of our observance of our parish feast day, but it seems especially appropriate as we continue this three-year period of Eucharistic Revival to reinvigorate our belief in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is a very powerful form of prayer. Many of you already make Adoration a regular part of your prayer routine, but if this isn’t something you’ve tried before, I highly encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and sign up for a slot. If an hour seems like a long time, never fear…it tends to go by all too quickly, in my experience. In fact, we live in such a frenetic, ever-connected world that silence is hard to come by. Yet our souls crave silence, time to just rest in the presence of the Lord, to love Him and to allow Him to love us. If you haven’t experienced the peace that comes from spending an hour in a nearly-empty church alone with the Lord, you really should. It’s a special treat.
