Today we begin Catholic Schools Week, a very special week here at Christ the King. (Our school children definitely know how to make a big deal about Catholic Schools Week, and they will have special themes for every day of the week.) It’s always so edifying to see our teachers and students displaying such great pride in their Catholic education. After all, the school is the largest ministry in our parish, so we devote a lot of time and resources to this mission of forming our children in the faith.
This investment in our kids is worth it. We all know that we face an uphill battle as we pass the faith onto the next generation, and we’ve all heard the dire statistics about young people leaving the faith. While a Catholic education doesn’t guarantee that a young person will remain Catholic, the research consistently shows that it’s one of the primary factors that helps. That’s why our dedicated school community works so hard to provide our children with a solid education rooted in Christian values. To quote the founder of Holy Cross, Blessed Basil Moreau, “While we prepare useful citizens for society, we shall likewise do our utmost to prepare citizens for heaven.” I’m very proud of the good work being done in our school every day, and I’m grateful for the many people whose tireless efforts make it possible.
Today (Sunday January 26th) is our annual school Open House. I’d like to invite every single parishioner to stop by, even if just for a quick visit. After all, you help support the school every week — hopefully by your prayers, but also by the portion of the Sunday collection that subsidizes the school. So be sure to stop by. I think that the more each of you learns about the incredible Christian formation taking place in our school, the more proud you will be to support this ministry with your prayers.
